Pastor’s Corner

St. Martin's Lutheran Church
February 1,2017

Dear Members of St. Martin's,
As you know, our council has been working for three months to secure an interim pastor for st.
Martin's since Pastor Don Phillips became ill and was no longer able to serve our congregation.

After much prayer, discussion, a meeting with our Bishop Tim Smith and several meetings with
council members and the executive committee, council has agreed to enter into a six-month
renewable contract with Pastor John L. Petry III of Charlotte to become our interim pastor as
of February 6, 2017. Pastor Petry will lead our worship services, provide pastoral care and
visitation, teach confirmation classes, attend council and committee meetings, and assist and
support us in the various ministries of the church within the framework of a 30-hour week.

Pastor Petry was ordained almost 35 years ago in the Indiana/Kentucky Synod. Since then he
has served four churches in North Carolina and one in South Carolina. He and his wife Pam
were married in May 2010 with four Lutheran pastors participating in the service. They enjoy
bicycling, hiking, gardening and sharing their Christian faith with others, often through the Via
de Cristo movement. Pam has worked as a speech language pathologist for 32 years, mostly in Wake and Charlotte Mecklenburg school systems. They share four adult children, ages 30
through 25, who live currently in Mt. Holly NC, Washington DC, Kansas City MO and
Knoxville TN. They have lived with their 7-year-old lab and two laying hens near Novant
Presbyterian Main Hospital in Charlotte for the past three years.

We are pleased and grateful to have Pastor Petry join us as we seek a permanent pastor. We
look forward to working with him to sustain and build our nearly 200-year old adventure in
faith. Please take the time to introduce yourself to him and to welcome him into our

The peace of Christ to you all,

David Barringer
Congregation President
